UNESCO projects a global deficit of 44 million primary and secondary education teachers by 2030, with sub-Saharan Africa alone needing 15 million more. #TeachersMissing in classrooms is often because teachers are overwhelmed, under-resourced, overlooked and unfairly paid. The Challenges Facing Teachers Today

Teachers across Africa face significant challenges: limited access to professional development, overcrowded classrooms, insufficient teaching resources, and growing demand for digital skills. Declining social recognition of the profession has compounded this. As a result, the percentage of primary teachers leaving the profession has doubled, from 4.6% in 2015 to over 9% in 2022, highlighting the need to invest not only in recruiting teachers but also in retaining those already in classrooms. Too often, teachers are not deployed to the regions that need them most. Even in countries such as The Gambia, where notable progress has been made in expanding the supply of trained teachers and improving access to primary education, foundational learning remains low and deployment challenges persist, especially in remote and rural areas, according to a 2025 UNICEF report.

Why Teacher Training Matters

Teachers are the single most important school-based factor influencing student learning. They do far more than deliver lessons. They build confidence, identify individual strengths, and create environments where children can thrive. Great teaching does not happen by chance. It develops through continuous learning, practical experience, mentorship, and access to the right resources. Nearly 45% of countries have no teacher training on foundational literacy and numeracy, and fewer than half of the countries surveyed in UNICEF's RAPID 2023 analysis focus specifically on foundational literacy, numeracy, and socio-emotional learning in their national curriculum. Even as digital access expands, every child deserves not just a tool but a teacher who inspires curiosity and helps them discover their potential. UNESCO “stresses that while AI can support education, teachers must remain at its core, guiding students with empathy, creativity, and judgement that no machine can replace”. When teachers are supported, they adapt more effectively to new technologies and changing curricula, and the benefits extend beyond the classroom. Students stay engaged, perform better academically, and build the skills they need for lifelong success.
