The Hole in the Ceiling: A Story About What We Choose Not to See

When it rains in class, Fatou moves her desk. Not because she wants a better view. But because that’s the one spot where the ceiling won’t drip on her notebook.

A ceiling should protect. This one threatens. No light. No ceiling fan. Just a gaping hole and stains spreading like neglect.

When the rains come, class stops. Books get soaked. Chalk turns to paste. For Musa, who is hard of hearing, the echo from the exposed roof makes it impossible to lip-read his teacher.

We talk about “inclusive learning” in policy documents. We host workshops. We print banners that say “Leave No Child Behind.” But inclusion isn’t a banner. It’s infrastructure.

Infrastructure is not inclusive if:
• There are buildings without ramps for students to get into class
• A child with asthma learns under mold-stained tiles
• A learner who is hard of hearing sits under a broken roof where every raindrop echoes, making lip-reading and hearing aids useless
• A girl misses school because there’s no door on the toilet, no water, and now, no ceiling to protect her dignity

These classrooms weren’t built broken. They became broken because we stopped looking up.

But here’s the other story, the one we can write next.

Inclusive infrastructure means Fatou enters through a ramp into a classroom where the roof is solid. Where the lights work. Where the nets are fixed. Where a fan spins. Where the walls aren’t streaked with damp.

It means designing for the child we don’t see yet: the one with low vision who needs glare-free lighting. The autistic child who can’t focus when rain hammers on exposed metal. The girl who needs a safe, private bathroom to manage her period and stay in school.
