Beyond Coding: What STEM Education Really Teaches Children

When many people hear the term STEM education, they often picture children learning to code, building robots, or solving complex engineering problems. While these are important elements of STEM, they represent only a small part of the story. A child stacking building blocks into a tower is not simply playing. They are learning engineering by designing a structure, discovering science through balance and gravity, using mathematics to count and measure, and engaging with technology through the tools around them. What looks like play is the foundations of STEM thinking. The real value of STEM goes far beyond technical skills. When a child learns to distinguish between colours, they are learning classification and pattern recognition. And every time a child asks "Why?", experiments with a new idea, works with classmates to solve a challenge, or learns from a mistake, they are developing skills that will serve them for life.



What STEM Really Means


STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. According to UNICEF, STEM is not simply a cluster of professions. It represents an approach to learning and thinking: the ability to work with data, understand technologies, analyse information, and solve complex problems. Rather than teaching each subject separately, STEM encourages children to study  them together through hands-on activities, experiments, play-based learning, and real-world problem-solving. It teaches children to ask questions, investigate challenges, analyse information, and create practical solutions. This helps children connect different areas of learning while developing practical problem-solving skills. This is what makes STEM different: it builds character and capability at the same time.



Why These Skills Matter


STEM is not simply about preparing children for specific careers. It is about nurturing curious minds, confident learners, and creative problem-solvers who can adapt to a rapidly evolving world. The World Economic Forum reports that 170 million new jobs are expected to be created globally by 2030, while 39 per cent of workers' core skills are expected to change by the same year. These skills matter in every aspect of life. A child observing patterns in nature, testing different ideas during a classroom experiment, or working as part of a team is developing resilience, creativity, communication, and confidence. Whether they one day become teachers, doctors, entrepreneurs, farmers, artists, engineers, or community leaders, these are the skills that help people adapt, innovate, make informed decisions, and contribute meaningfully to society. Introducing children to STEM from an early age lays the foundation for this future, giving them the confidence to embrace change rather than fear it.



Why Inclusion Matters


Expanding access to STEM education is also an important step towards creating more equitable opportunities. UNESCO continues to emphasise that increasing girls' participation in STEM requires quality learning opportunities, well-supported teachers, and strong mentorship. In developing countries, the gender digital divide continues to limit girls' development of digital skills. Very few countries can boast that 10% or more of women have programming skills, while 31 countries can point to at least 10% of men with these skills. Even with the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI), gender inequalities persist.  Men dominate AI workforce positions at 70%, while women hold merely 18% of AI leadership roles. Some countries are working to close this gap directly: Kenya, for example, has introduced coding into its primary and secondary school curricula. Gender stereotypes and the lack of role models also affect girls' interest in STEM from an early age. When girls and learners with limited access to STEM opportunities are encouraged to engage with science and technology early, they are more likely to see themselves as innovators, creators, and leaders who can contribute meaningfully to their communities and beyond.
